Facial Spa vs. Medical Spa: What’s the Difference?
A facial spa is run by licensed estheticians and focuses on skin health, maintenance and relaxation — facials, exfoliation, extractions, waxing and non-invasive devices. A medical spa operates under a physician and offers medical procedures like injectables, lasers and medical-grade peels. Lumina is a licensed-esthetician facial and waxing studio, not a medical spa.

What’s the difference between a facial spa and a medical spa?
The clearest line is who’s legally responsible for the work and what tools they’re allowed to use. A facial spa (or esthetics studio) is staffed by state-licensed estheticians and centers on the health, appearance and comfort of your skin’s surface — keeping it clear, hydrated, exfoliated and glowing. A medical spa (med-spa) works under the supervision of a physician or other medical provider and can perform procedures that reach deeper into the skin or break the surface. Both have their place; they simply do different jobs. Many people see an esthetician monthly for upkeep and visit a med-spa or dermatologist occasionally for a specific medical treatment.
What does a licensed esthetician do?
An esthetician is trained and licensed in the care of healthy skin. At Lumina that includes:
- Customized facials and skin consultations
- Professional cleansing, enzyme and manual exfoliation, and microdermabrasion
- Extractions to clear congestion and blackheads
- Non-invasive devices such as galvanic current and high-frequency
- Relaxing facial massage and gua sha
- Gentle, low-temperature botanical silk waxing
- Guidance on a simple, effective home-care routine
These treatments maintain and improve the skin without breaking its surface or entering medical territory. They’re ideal for ongoing skin health, prevention and that visibly refreshed, well-cared-for look.
What does a medical spa do that we don’t?
Med-spas offer medical procedures that are outside an esthetician’s scope and require medical oversight — for example injectables (Botox and fillers), laser and IPL treatments, medical-grade chemical peels, microneedling and similar. We don’t offer any of these, and we’ll never claim to. If your goal is a medical result — softening deep wrinkles with injectables, laser hair removal, or treating a diagnosed skin condition — the right place is a med-spa, dermatologist or physician. We’re always happy to tell you honestly when what you want is beyond what a facial studio should do.
Which one is right for me?
Choose a facial spa like Lumina when you want healthy, well-maintained skin, help with everyday concerns like congestion, dryness, dullness or texture, gentle waxing, and a calm, relaxing experience on a regular rhythm. Choose a medical spa or dermatologist when you need a medical procedure or treatment for a diagnosed condition. The two work beautifully together — think of esthetics as the consistent monthly care that keeps your skin healthy between any occasional medical treatments.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lumina Skin Sanctuary a medical spa?
No. We’re a licensed-esthetician facial and waxing studio focused on skin health and relaxation. We don’t offer medical services.
Do you offer injectables, lasers or chemical peels?
No. We don’t provide injectables, laser or IPL, medical-grade peels, microneedling or similar procedures. Our focus is facials, exfoliation, extractions, non-invasive devices and gentle waxing.
Can a facial give me results like a medical treatment?
A facial won’t replace a medical procedure, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What regular facials do exceptionally well is keep your skin clear, hydrated, exfoliated and glowing over time — real, visible results within their scope.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see an esthetician?
No referral needed — just book online. If anything you’re dealing with looks medical, we’ll gently suggest you see a dermatologist.
Are esthetician treatments safe for sensitive skin?
Yes — because they’re non-invasive and customized. We adjust exfoliation and products to your skin and always start with a consultation. New clients save 20% with code WELCOME20.
