East coast vs West coast: how the beaches differ for skin
These are general patterns, not rules. Your own skin type and routine matter more than your coastline, but the coast does change which problems show up first.

| What changes | West coast (Gulf) | East coast (Atlantic) |
|---|---|---|
| Water and waves | Typically calmer, shallower and bath-warm through summer. | Typically stronger surf and steadier onshore breezes. |
| Sun and daylight | Faces west: sunsets over the water and late-day glare on the face. | Faces east: sunrise over the water and bright morning sun. |
| Wind and salt | Gentler breezes. Heat and humidity matter more than wind. | More wind and salt spray, which dry and roughen skin. |
| Common skin pattern | Sweat, sunscreen buildup, congestion and sun spots. | Wind-dried, salt-roughened skin and sun-weathered texture. |
| Facial focus | Clarify, balance oil and brighten. | Hydrate, restore the barrier and resurface. |
| Closest Lumina facials | Deep-Cleansing Acne · Signature Glow | Express Hydrating · Resurfacing Renewal |
North Florida vs South Florida: how latitude changes skin
North Florida has four real seasons. South Florida is near-tropical. That changes how your facial plan should change across the year.
| What changes | North Florida | South Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Real cool spells, cold fronts and the occasional freeze. Heated indoor air is drying. | Warm, near-tropical winters. There is no cold season. |
| Sun and UV | Strong in summer, easing in winter. | High nearly all year, so pigmentation shows earlier. |
| Humidity | Swings with the season: sticky summers, drier winters. | Steady and humid, with chilled indoor air. |
| Common skin pattern | Seasonal swings: dry and tight in winter, oily and congested in summer. | Constant oil, sun spots and dehydration from air-conditioning. |
| Facial focus | Change the plan by season: hydrate in winter, clarify in summer. | Brighten, protect and keep hydration light all year. |

The seven Florida beach areas, in detail
Each section covers the shoreline, what it does to skin, the facial styles that suit it, a little verified resort history where we have it, and the closest facial on the Lumina menu.

Panhandle & Emerald Coast
Beaches: Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, Navarre, Destin, the 30A beaches, Panama City Beach
The Panhandle is Florida's four-season shoreline: broad, bright white sand, clear green-blue Gulf water, hot humid summers and cooler, drier winters with the occasional cold snap.

First Coast: Amelia Island to Flagler Beach
Beaches: Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville Beaches, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine Beach, Flagler Beach
The First Coast pairs Atlantic surf and steady sea breezes with real seasons. Winters are cooler than anywhere farther south, and the shoreline runs from dunes and sea oats to Florida's oldest city.

A little history
In 1888 Henry Flagler opened the 540-room Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine. It was Florida's first major resort and set off a wave of Atlantic-coast resort building.

Tampa Bay & the Sun Coast
Beaches: Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key, Venice
This is the Gulf coast's big-city stretch: calm, shallow, warm water, wide soft-sand beaches and a large metro area behind them. Summers are hot and wet, and winters are mild.

A little history
Henry Plant's Tampa Bay Hotel opened in February 1891 and helped build winter tourism on Florida's west coast. It is now the main building of the University of Tampa. Farther south, Warm Mineral Springs in North Port holds mineral water at about 85°F. Archaeologists have found evidence of people there more than 10,000 years ago. A popular legend links it to Ponce de León's search for a fountain of youth, but that is legend, not documented fact.

Space & Treasure Coast
Beaches: Cocoa Beach, Melbourne Beach, Sebastian Inlet, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Stuart
Surf towns and long, open beaches define the central Atlantic coast. Wind, waves and many hours outdoors are the everyday routine, with strong sun most of the year.

Gold Coast: Palm Beach to Miami
Beaches: Palm Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne
The Gold Coast is Florida's urban Atlantic shoreline: beachfront towers, Art Deco blocks and a dress-up culture, with a near-tropical climate and strong sun all year.

A little history
Flagler's railway reached Palm Beach by 1894, when the 1,100-room Royal Poinciana Hotel opened, and reached Biscayne Bay in 1896. The Breakers began as the Palm Beach Inn in 1895 to 1896 and was renamed in 1901. The current building opened in 1926. In the 1930s and 1940s Miami Beach added its Art Deco hotel blocks.

Southwest Gulf: Naples to Sanibel
Beaches: Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Beach, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva, Lovers Key
The Southwest Gulf has calm, warm water, shelling beaches and famous sunsets. It is subtropical, with a wet, hot summer, a mild winter and a large seasonal population. This is the coast Lumina is based on.

The Florida Keys
Beaches: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Bahia Honda, Key West
The Keys are a chain of islands with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf and Florida Bay on the other. There are fewer long beaches here and far more shoreline, sandbars and water time, in a near-tropical climate.

The facials that fit Florida skin
Across every coast, a good Florida facial balances deep cleansing with hydration and brightening. Harsh stripping backfires in heat and salt, and skipping SPF undoes the work.

How a Florida facial is performed, step by step
A typical Lumina facial adapts the same six steps to the day's skin:
- Double cleanseAn oil cleanser lifts sunscreen, sweat and salt; a gentle wash follows.
- ExfoliationGentle exfoliation sets the pace for the day's skin: more resurfacing for rough texture, softer for dry or windy skin.
- Extractions and steamWhere pores are congested, warm steam and careful extractions clear them.
- Targeted treatment and massageBrightening, hydrating or firming actives are worked in with massage.
- MaskClay for oil and congestion, hydrating or antioxidant masks for dry or sun-stressed skin.
- Hydration and SPFA skin-matched moisturizer and broad-spectrum sunscreen finish the visit.

How is skin different on Florida's East coast and West coast?
The Gulf (West) coast is usually calmer and hotter, so humidity, sweat, sunscreen buildup and congestion are the main problems. The Atlantic (East) coast adds more wind, salt and surf, which dry and roughen skin. Both coasts get strong sun. Your own skin type matters more than your coastline, so treat this as a starting point.
What facial is best for North Florida versus South Florida?
North Florida has real seasons, so the best plan changes with them: richer hydration and barrier support in the cool, dry months and clarifying, lighter care in summer. South Florida has strong sun almost all year, so brightening, sun protection and lightweight hydration matter most. The beach-area sections above name the closest Lumina facial for each shoreline.
Which Florida beach area is hardest on skin?
None is easy. Sun is a factor everywhere, and it is strongest and most constant in South Florida and the Keys. Wind and salt make the Atlantic coast drying, while the Gulf coast's heat and humidity drive oil and congestion. The most common mistake is skipping daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, which matters on every Florida beach.
Can I get a facial after a beach day or sunburn?
Not on a fresh sunburn. If skin is red, hot, peeling or tender, wait until it has healed, since exfoliation and extractions can irritate it. For a normal tan or mild sun exposure, tell your esthetician about it at the start of the visit so the treatment can be adjusted. This is general skin-care education, not medical advice.
Does Lumina have studios across Florida?
No. Lumina Skin Sanctuary is a single licensed-esthetician facial studio in Fort Myers, FL. This guide is education about how Florida's coasts and cities affect skin. We name the closest Lumina facial for each so you can see what matches. It is not a list of locations.
How often should I get a facial if I live near the beach?
Every 3 to 4 weeks works for most Florida skin. If you are clearing congestion or pigment, a shorter series spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart works better. A monthly rhythm also helps because the sun does not take a winter break in most of the state.
