What to Expect at Your First Facial

Your first facial is relaxing and low-pressure: a short skin consultation, then a double cleanse, gentle exfoliation, optional extractions, a soothing face-and-shoulder massage, a treatment mask with serums, and SPF to finish. Arrive makeup-free if you can. There’s no downtime — most people head straight back to their day.

What happens step by step during a facial?

Here’s the full flow so nothing feels like a surprise:

  • Consultation. We look at your skin, ask about your goals, allergies, medications and any products you use, and tailor the treatment to you.
  • Double cleanse. A first cleanse lifts makeup, sunscreen and oil; a second cleanse works on the skin itself.
  • Exfoliation. A gentle enzyme or manual exfoliation (sometimes light microdermabrasion) clears dead surface cells so everything after works better.
  • Optional extractions. If you have blackheads or congestion, we soften the skin and clear pores. It can feel like light pressure — tell us anytime and we ease off.
  • Massage. A relaxing face, neck and shoulder massage — often the part clients love most — boosts circulation and lymphatic flow.
  • Mask, serums, moisturizer. A targeted mask and serums chosen for your skin, followed by eye cream and moisturizer.
  • SPF finish. We finish with sunscreen — essential in Florida — and a simple, no-pressure home-care suggestion.

How should I prepare for my first facial?

Come with clean, product-free skin if you can — but if you arrive with makeup on, don’t worry, cleansing is step one anyway. Skip strong at-home exfoliants and, ideally, don’t start a brand-new active in the days before. Avoid heavy sun or a fresh sunburn right before your visit. If you can, book a time when you’re not rushing off to a big event immediately after, so you can enjoy the calm.

What should I tell my esthetician?

Be open — it genuinely changes the treatment. Mention any prescription retinoids (like tretinoin), acids, Accutane use, recent professional treatments, active cold sores, allergies (including latex or nut oils), pregnancy, and skin conditions like rosacea or eczema. These guide how we exfoliate and which products we use, and in a few cases we’ll adjust or postpone a step to keep your skin safe. There are no wrong answers, and nothing you say will surprise us.

Will my skin look red or need downtime afterward?

A standard facial has no real downtime. You may look slightly flushed for an hour or two, especially after extractions, and that settles quickly. Your skin will feel clean, soft and hydrated. We’ll ask you to avoid heavy makeup, intense workouts and direct sun for the rest of the day, and to keep up your SPF. Most clients go right back to work or errands looking refreshed rather than obviously “done.”

Frequently asked questions

How long does a first facial take?

Plan for about 60 minutes for a full first facial, plus a few minutes for the consultation. If you’re short on time, a 30-minute express facial (from $55) covers cleanse, exfoliation and a mask.

Does a facial hurt?

No — it’s designed to be relaxing. The only part with any sensation is extractions, which can feel like light pressure. Tell us if anything is uncomfortable and we adjust immediately.

Should I get extractions on my first visit?

If your skin is congested, yes — but they’re always optional. We only do what your skin can comfortably handle in one session and never force clogged pores.

Can I wear makeup to my appointment?

You can. We’ll cleanse it off as the first step. Coming makeup-free just gives us a clearer first look at your skin.

What’s a good first facial to choose?

The customizable Signature Glow Facial (from $60) is our most popular starting point because we tailor it to whatever your skin needs that day. New clients save 20% with code WELCOME20.
